Brought to you by four of the UK’s most prolific freestyle rappers, A Play On Words is the new hip hop musical sketch show exploring the various ways we use words.

This innovative blend of rap, comedy and improvisation is a refreshing take on modern day Britain and the way we communicate.

The hip hop quartet featuring Dekay, MIDI, Mr Tongue Twister and Tenchoo, demonstrate the infinite ways words are used with comedy gems such as The Jeremy Vile Show and the hilarious Cockney Rhyming Slang, depicting a day in the life of an East End geezer.

The light hearted mood is tempered with more passionate expressions of the art form in pieces like Lost for Words, voiced by a depressed author that eloquently describes the frustration of writer’s block.
For those who expect a hip hop show to represent the urban side of things, there are tales from the street and sketches on the subject of a corrupt courtroom, where the participants Tell the Lie, the Whole Lie and Nothing But the Lie.

For an educational experience, learn from the quotes of inspirational figures in Words that Changed the World and watch in amazement as a brain scan determines what parts of the brain are used during improvising and prewritten rapping in

This is Your Brain on Words. Of course if you are just looking for a laugh, there are sketches such as the rib splitting Advertising Lingo in which bewildered shoppers are targeted by a sales pitch using marketing jargon and Accents which follows the journey of a man travelling throughout the UK.

If this wasn’t enough, an additional part to the night is the unique improvised rap show ‘Act On Words’. The music is original, the energy is high, and the on the spot games (fuelled by ideas from the crowd) are always hilariously unexpected. Each show is completely unique as random suggestions for characters, scenarios and words are incorporated by the rappers. With games including For or Against, News Round and Confession Box, the result is always brand new innovative entertainment completely controlled by the audience.

‘A Play On Words’ debuts at Rich Mix, Shoreditch on Thursday 28th January 2016. Tickets £8 (£6 conc) 8pm.
