Taking its cue from a letter that Alberto Giacometti wrote to his New York dealer Pierre Matisse (c. 1946), the upcoming exhibition explores a pivotal period in the development of the artist’s career. Giacometti’s letter focuses on a series of sculptures from the years 1925-1931, providing insights into his practice and marking a deep personal and stylistic crisis, that gradually led him to withdraw from traditional sculptural techniques and to experiment with Primitivism, Cubism, and Surrealism, in order to form the idiosyncratic style that characterises his later work.
