Join us for an evening of dramatic music by Franz Joseph Haydn. The Royal Free Music Society will be singing his “Nelson Mass”.

Originally known as the “Mass in Troubled Times” (Missa in Angustiis), this magnificent choral work, brooding but defiant in tone, is now one of Haydn’s best-loved pieces. It was composed in 1798 at a time of widespread fear and uncertainty - Haydn’s native Austria had suffered multiple defeats at the hands of Napoleon Bonaparte, and Vienna itself had come under threat. But by the time of its first performance just months later, news had reached audiences of Napoleon’s defeat by Nelson at the Battle of the Nile, and the work quickly became known as the “Nelson Mass”.

The evening will also include a performance by the Hampstead Sinfonietta of Haydn’s Symphony No. 88 in G Major. This energetic work, known by its nickname “Letter V”, had an enthusiastic reception at its first London performance in 1789. It has since become a firm concert favourite.

The choir will be conducted by Benjamin Wolf and joined by soloists Maud Millar, Rose Martin, Matthew Pochin, and Benjamin Seifert. The Hampstead Sinfonietta will be conducted by Andrew Rochford.
