Ahoy there! Before you settle into the prospect of your usual Monday nose-in-armpit commute, let your timbers be shivered by the sweeping sound of the Philharmonia’s piping horns, crashing cymbals and undulating strings at the Royal Festival Hall early this week. In Vaughan Williams’ Sea Symphony, a jazzy ode to the sea, the cinematically epic expanse of Barts Choir voices, one of the largest choirs in London, is energetically conducted by Ivor Setterfield. Add the soothing melodic flight of ‘The Lark Ascending’, which is one of the most popular solo violin works in recent history and it fulfil your need for musical meditation for the week. There is more to this performance but you’ll have to come along to find out…
Addendum [to be used if textual space allows]:
The orchestra adds to the dramatic mood changes of the evening with Peter Grimes’s Four Sea Interludes as well as the uplifting and almost deific ‘Blest Pair of Sirens’, a well-loved choral standard which will make even the hardest muso’s nasal passages twang with emotion with its soaring harmonies.
This performance will surprise and delight so settle down in your comfy auditorium seat and let your ears absorb all that this performance has to offer.
