CoolTan Arts are staging a Walks Festival, Explore, Exercise, Exhale, on 28 March – 2 April 2017. With a range of alternative, historic and cultural walks in and around South London, it will tackle stigmas around mental health, and celebrate the CoolWalks programme, which trains vulnerable adults to become Walking Guides, and has been running for over ten years.

‘Explore, Exhale, Exercise’ will include 7 walks in South London, a Walking Workshop, and an Open Afternoon at CoolTan Arts where people can find out how to join the CoolWalks programme, and do a free taster walk. CoolTan Arts is delivering the festival in collaboration with InspiralLondon, and artist-led project creating a new 300-mile walk spiralling out through London, and Bermondsey Artists Group, which creates opportunities for artists who live, work or study in Southwark.

CoolWalks helps those with mental health conditions (from low level anxiety to more challenging, enduring illnesses) to train as walk guides. With over 30 people conducting the skills-based training every year, the programme helps people build their confidence and get them back into employment. 100% of the walks ticket prices go back into the programme. Those interested in joining the programme are invited to attend a Walks Workshop (1 April, 2.30-4.30pm, at CGP London) or Open Afternoon (29 March, 2-4pm at CoolTan Arts).

Based around the history of Southwark, the tour guides are encouraged to research and craft stories they feel are important, presenting an alternative, creative, sometimes radical view of the city we live in or visit. Walks raise awareness of political, racial and societal issues which have been shown to have an impact on mental health, such as the ethnic diversity of Southwark, the history of the LGBT Community and Black Heritage, while others tell the human face of Southwark through historic figures like Charlie Chaplin and Michael Caine, who lived in the area. For the Chaplin walk we encounter Charlie’s family, exploring their struggles to survive the up and down fortunes of the music hall life.

About CoolTan Arts: CoolTan Arts is an award winning arts in mental health charity run by and for adults with experience of mental health conditions. We believe that mental wellbeing is enhanced by the power of creativity.
