As patron saint of farmers, shepherds and butchers as well as England, St. George is a character well suited to being celebrated at Borough Market.
Taking place on Sunday 23rd April between 12-4pm, this festival of food, music, storytelling and theatre will also involve a visit from some of the Market’s Catalonian friends, marking the fact that St. George is also patron saint of that region.
The Market will be filled with the sounds and smells of both cultures as Borough Market step up to the occasion, with traders creating special themed products for sale on the day.
There will also be free cookery demonstration kitchens throughout the day (which will also be BSL interpreted), a performance of George and the dragon from theatre group the Lion’s Part, plus Folk Dance Remixed will be joining us again with their unique fusion of folk and hiphop dance. Not only that but you can also watch the Castellers of London build a human tower. Not one to be missed!
The exchanging of roses and books as a sign of respect is something of a Catalan custom and the UK delegation of the Government of Catalonia will perform the ritual with members of the public, while traders will hand out roses to revellers throughout the day.
Join us 12-4pm on Sunday 23rd April to celebrate St. George’s Day and to learn more about English and Catalan traditions and cooking!
