Dinner and drinks on a first date…boring! Unique dating event tests true compatibility with flat-pack furniture challenge

Grab your screwdriver and nails, you’re going on date! Dating service Match is launching a speed-dating event with a difference this April. Singles will be paired up and challenged to construct their very own piece of flat pack furniture – an activity often described as the ultimate test of a relationship.

A world away from drinks and dinner, the service has been designed to offer a window into the future for prospective lovebirds and test their true compatibility on a first date. While deciphering the instructions, and starting assembly, singles will not only be able to have the usual first-date chit-chat but can assess how suited they are by testing their DIY partner’s patience, leadership skills, trust, control and stress levels.

Assembling flat-pack furniture can be considered a sign that the relationship is getting serious. Many think that if you can put together a bed-side table with someone without ending up in a blazing row, you’re well on your way to a happy and long-lasting relationship. However, in many cases it can lead to disagreements and unwanted stress. So, Match is encouraging those on the lookout for romance to take the ultimate test, not six months into a relationship but on a first date.

Singles are invited to Gilgamesh in Camden where they will receive a free drink and toolkit before meeting a fellow single and being given a piece of furniture to assemble. Pairs will be given 30 minutes to complete the task before teaming up with a new single with a different item to construct.

The DIY dating event will be on offer on Wednesday 12th April and Wednesday 19th April at Gilgamesh, Camden Market, London.

Singles can register for the event by emailing [email protected] with their name, age, gender and state whether they are looking for a man or a woman. Places are limited and will be allocated on a first come, first served basis.

The two dating events will initially run as pilot scheme in London, with the potential to roll-out to different cities across the UK as part of Match’s wider events programme.

Match’s dating Expert Vicki Pavitt commented: “With busy lives, millennials are looking to find something meaningful but quickly. Often couples don’t really get to truly know their other half until it’s six months into the relationship and they’re having to take out the bins or do their first bit of DIY. This event allows singles to fast forward the relationship process, being able to see how their potential partner performs the more mundane tasks of life. If you can get that bed-side table made without any arguments, you might well be on to a winner.”
