This series of 3 lectures will compare Romantic, rural art with the Modern, urban art produced in Britain, France and America between 1850 and 1950.

Each lecture will examine how artists responded to modernity in London, Paris and New York by either embracing new social orders and cultural developments or by retreating into the pre-industrialised countryside as a form of escapism.
