Hear from two of the finest authors working in the Spanish language today – Samanta Schweblin and Mariana Enriquez join us for a special PEN Atlas at Waterstones Islington.
Heralded as ‘one of the freshest voices to come out of the Spanish language,’ Schweblin’s work establishes a heightened sense of psychological tension, deftly handling ideas of trauma, and forgetting. Highly original and deeply unsettling, Fever Dream is a haunting, modern parable.
Along with Fever Dream, Mariana Enriquez’s ‘wildly imaginative’ short stories, The Things We Lost in the Fire, are another literary landmark to have recently come out of Argentina. Gothic, unnerving and yet engrossing, Enriquez’s work carries traces of Borges, whilst remaining unequivocally reminiscent of Angela Carter. These stories are fraught with violence and corruption, musing on desire, deception and the remnants of a dictatorship.
