Post-screening DJ set with Massive Arms on the decks

For the next six months T A P E will be screening films which explore culture, identity and heritage. This month T A P E presents an intimate and engrossing look into the formative years of one of football’s greatest ever players, Swedish talisman, Zlatan Ibrahimovi?.

Perhaps one of the game's most polarising stars, Zlatan has been lauded for his goals and criticised for his violent outbursts but his story is also a truly international and surprisingly humble tale. The film’s directors, Fredrik Gertten and Magnus Gertten, take us through the early years of this child of Bosnian, Muslim and Catholic immigrants on an estate in Malmo and onto his time at Juventus where the true rise to fame and fortune took flight.

With access to an impressive amount of archive footage, this film creates a poignant narrative, breaking down the various pieces that make this giant into an enigmatic mosaic. By the end you may be no less divided in your feelings towards him but you’ll have a colorful sense of someone who has always struggled to balance the line between governing and being governed and what it takes to have to leave home and become a trademark. An everyman tale of a man who has always had a point to prove but never forgotten where he came from.
