Ant first started playing guitar at 8, but unlike the majority of his contemporaries didn’t actually study music at university but instead won a scholarship to read physics at Edinburgh University. However, music was never far from his mind and during that time he also won a scholarship to spend a semester at the world famous Berklee College of Music, Boston where his interest in jazz improvisation was developed and nurtured. After completing his degree he decided that making music was where his true passion lay, eventually moving to London and immersing himself in the scene before spending some time studying and playing in New York. On his return to the UK it wasn't long before he was attracting attention and his debut album as a leader, “Entanglement", released in 2013 received considerable critical acclaim. A 29-date tour followed before Ant took himself to Brazil to complete his second volume of compositions, which became his second highly acclaimed CD “Zero Sum World" released on the prestigious Whirlwind label in February 2015. Unsurprisingly Ant has also become first call for some of the UK's finest musicians and can be heard performing regularly with the likes of multi-award winning saxophonist Tim Garland in his band "Lighthouse", where he was the featured on Tim's album “ONE" which was short listed for a Grammy award and won the award for Top 2016 Jazz Album in Jazzwise Magazine. Ant also plays with two of the UK’s most acclaimed pianists, Gwilym Simcock and Jason Rebello, and if all that were not enough, also works with saxophonist/composer Paul Riley, trumpeter Henry Spencer, Quincy Jones' protege Ollie Howell, Partikel and Trio HLK, which will soon be releasing their debut album featuring Steve Lehman and Dame Evelyn Glennie. 2016 saw the emergence of the Art Of Rhythm Trio, the band Ant will be performing with this evening, which features Matt Ridley on bass and Asaf Sirkis on drums and konnakol. Although they have played together in different ensembles this line up has allowed them to consolidate their musical relationships and develop a true trio dynamic. Most notable perhaps is the inclusion of Indian classical elements such as konnakol, the South-Indian spoken percussion, adding another texture to this intriguing and captivating mix. Described as “an innovator" by The Guardian, Ant has undoubtedly come of age as an impressive and creative musician and is well worth catching. Highly recommended.
