About the event

On Saturday 24 June members of Battersea Choral Society, with outstanding soloists and Musica Poetica, will perform an epic Baroque opera and an enchanting Ode written for the celebration of St Cecilias Day, by the English composer Henry Purcell.

Dido and Aeneas was first performed in 1689 at a girls boarding school in Chelsea. The story is based on Book IV of Virgils Aeneid. It recounts the love of Dido, Queen of Carthage, for the Trojan hero, Aeneas, and her despair when he abandons her.

Welcome to all the Pleasures was commissioned by the Musical Society of London in 1683. They organised a festival for the great patroness of music, and in honour of the celebration of the feast of St Cecilia, for which Purcell had written the Ode.

We look forward to welcoming you to our concert.
