Well, this promises to be a lot of fun. KoGo are the latest, and to my mind one of the best, of the new crop of Jazz/Groove bands to hit the UK scene of late. Led by the Award-winning singer/songwriter Kate Ockenden (Ko) on keyboards and vocals along with husband Geoff Ockenden (Go) on 6-string bass, this is a powerful, sophisticated take on contemporary Groove and R&B that deserves attention. A successful TV and film composer, regularly working for the likes of BBC2, CBBC, CBeebies and Sky TV, Kate has written copious amounts of production music for EMI and scored several independent feature films and documentaries. She won the Yamaha Youth Pop and Rock Awards in 1994, was a finalist in the 2005 BBC New Talent Competition and most recently won the Jazz/Blues category of the UK Songwriting Contest. So it's fair to say she knows what she's doing! As well as KoGo she tours regularly with Britain's Got Talent finalist Julian Smith, is mother to two young children and in her spare time(!) teaches music production, composition and performance at Worcester and Wolverhampton Universities. An in-demand bass player for more than 20 years, Geoff includes work at numerous venues around the country, including regular appearances at Ronnie Scott’s as well as underpinning shows with artists including Chaka Kahn, the aforementioned Julian Smith, Nigel Kennedy, The Average White Band, The Real Thing, Womack and Womack and Ruby Turner. The KoGo Project itself was founded in the summer of 2014 inspired, as Kate puts it "by a yearning to create honest, original jazz-funk music and perform it live". Although both Kate and Geoff have over 20 years experience of writing and performing this is their first venture together and very impressive it is too. Their debut album "Do It", released in 2016, has been extremely well received, attracting the attention of the likes of Michael McDonald "Brilliant", Bill Sharpe (Shakatak) "Great" as well as Jazz FM who invited them to perform live on the Chris Phillips show (6th June 2017). Making up the rest of the band for this evening's show will be Chris Aldridge (Gary Barlow, US3)-sax and Tony Robinson-drums. This will be their first appearance at the Club and is highly recommended.

“...knockout, the evening over before you knew it” Jazz Journal; “Kate Ockenden delivered soulful vocals and funky Rhodes……the standard of playing was excellent throughout…..[an] infectious mix of jazz, funk and soul.”The JazzMann
