About the event

A rare chance to hear the very best in traditional Cajun music
The Savoy family, from Eunice Louisiana, are the undisputed First Family of Cajun music, appearing in such prestigious venues as the Newport Folk Festival, the Berlin Jazz Festival, the Smithsonian Institution, the Getty Museum, and the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London. Each is a master musician, with award winning bands of their own. But together, as a family, they provide a very special experience that gets to the heart of the Cajun French tradition.

The Cajuns are the French inhabitants of southwest Louisiana. Their music has elements of folk, of country, of blues, but mostly it is unlike any other music you might hear.

For listeners, the band provide superb musicianship, intricate accordion, soulful fiddle and vocals. For dancers, they provide driving rhythms that say get up, move, have fun.

But the Savoys are more than just a band. In the years when Cajun music was being spurned in favour of mainstream popular music, patriarch Marc and his wife Ann were champions of the fight to keep Cajun traditions alive. The Saturday morning jam session at Marc’s Music Store outside Eunice is a “must see” for visitors to Louisiana. In more recent years, sons Joel and Wilson have led the drive to engage young people in the traditional music of their community. They can often be found entertaining the hip youngsters and drinking LA51 craft beer at the Blue Moon Saloon in Lafayette.

This is not just a rare chance to hear superb musicians in action. It is a chance to experience a living tradition. And a tradition that believes you should “let the good times roll.”
