“Adulterer’s juice and wizard’s seed, bathed in a cuckold’s tears…”
In 1583 two English wizards travelled across Europe in a cart laden with magical tomes, enchanted objects and psychedelic drugs. Their destination was Prague, their mission to discover the Elixir of Youth.
Dr Dee was a religious fanatic, an ingenious polymath and a jealous husband with a wife half his age. Edward Kelley was a rogue, a counterfeiter and possibly a spy. He was also one of the greatest alchemists that ever lived.
In Prague they rubbed shoulders with eccentric astronomers, a kabbalistic rabbi and even the most powerful man of his age: The Holy Roman Emperor Rudolf II.
In Elixir we meet them all, and find out what happened when an angel commanded Dee to share his wife with the unscrupulous Kelley.
“A magically entertaining evening” -Rory Kinnear
A riotous romp with Renaissance costumes, live music and a living homunculus, Elixir has been compared with the Carry On films and has tickled audiences in Prague, London and Melbourne.
For its latest production Elixir comes to The Isle of Dogs, the place Dr Dee called the Omphalos of Empire, and site of his strangest rituals.
Be prepared for magic, mayhem and adult themes as we summon the spirits for the ninth incarnation of…Elixir.
