About the event

Chaos Theory presents an evening of mesmeric sounds, multi-instrumental wonder, and folk tales old and new.

Fear Of The Forest

A mystical ensemble led by dulcimer, voice and hurdy-gurdy, who enthralled us all at their album launch at New River Studios last year.

Formed in 2012 and fronted by Kate Arnold on hammered dulcimer, violin and vocals, the band combines influences from English and French folk, Middle Eastern and even classical music to create a sound that has been described as 'punk baroque'. Minor keys, medieval harmonies and irregular yet insistent rhythms are defining features, and the underlying energy of the percussion is offset by the hypnotic, mysterious qualities of the dulcimer and vocal textures that range from the raw to the ethereal.

Kate has recently worked with Lisa Knapp, Doudou Cissoko and Daemonia Nymphe, and was previously a member of Sergeant Buzfuz, Paul Hawkins and the Awkward Silences, and Seventh Harmonic.

"A clash of occident and orient, of exotic arabesque and pastoral folk threads, of medieval and modern, the classic and the classical, of dark intensities and frivolous jauntiness." - Dancing About Architecture

Hazel Iris

A Californian songwriter who creates gorgeous indie folk with pop quirks and lavish harmonies. Her music has started to garner attention around the London circuit and has featured on BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 6, Radio X Frankfurt and WRFL USA, as well as being covered in Music Week and Headliner magazines.

Having studied opera as a soprano in Germany, her move to London gave birth to her far from conventional sound, drawing influence from artists such as Kate Bush, Beth Gibbons, Tori Amos and Feist.

This evening she and her troupe will provide sounds on accordion, cello, guitar, keys, percussion and voice.

“Her material and performance is outstanding.” - Tom Robinson, BBC Radio 6 Music

“Haunting yet alluring vocals that wander melodically like the birds and their dawn chorus.” - Music Week

“Uncomfortably beautiful” - Headliner Magazine

Yvonne McDonnell

This song writer and blogger has developed as an artist in huge leaps and bounds, since we first worked with her five years ago.

With a few releases under her belt displaying a growing passion for exploring ways to address various inequalities that we face every day, her lyrics have rung true for an increasing amount of people and resulted in a quietly growing audience of folk fans and curious newcomers.

An honest, heartfelt performer who reaches new minds with every show.

"She introduces the listener to a fresh, darker exploration of British modern folk" - Folk Radio UK

"Darkly beautiful tunes, drenched with Irishness and delivered through Yvonne’s timeless and intense voice" - FAME Magazine
