About the event

Jean M Gardiner a retrospective exhibition

Jean M Gardiner is a Hampstead-based artist whose contemplative depictions of the world around her are both moving and evocative, ranging from pen and inks and litho chalk through to watercolours and oils. Mainly figurative and largely revolving around light and shadow, her style has evolved throughout her 65 years of painting.

Jean M Gardiner grew up in Wales, attending Wallasey Art School from 16 and then going on to Liverpool College of Art in the 1950s, a contemporary of Cynthia Lennon. She spent some time in Somerset with her then husband, fellow painter Frank Anderson, before moving to London in 1963, where she has lived ever since. As well as raising a family and creating her own extensive portfolio of work, Jean lectured at North East London Polytechnic, and taught art at Hampstead School, Athlone House Nursing Home and at the Charlie Ratchford day care centre in Camden.

To view this impressive selection of her lifetime’s work is to journey the buildings, streets and landscapes of the places she has lived and visited, from Australia and New York to Oxfordshire and Jersey, and of course the last 50 years living close to Hampstead Heath. At 85 Jean is still painting. Her latest exhibition at Lauderdale House is a retrospective of her work to date, and gives people a chance to view and buy originals and prints from her broad range of styles and medias.
