8:00PM RMG COLLECTIVE Originally named “Skydive” after a Freddie Hubbard tune they played during their first performance, RMG Collective were brought together for the Chatham Jazz Festival as an all star band and in the tradition of such things, enjoyed themselves so much that they decided to make the line up permanent. The band features 606 Club owner and flautist Steve Rubie (Julian Joseph Big Band, Samara), virtuoso trombonist Geoff Mason (Ronnie Scott’s Big Band) and leading UK pianist Jonathan Gee (best known for his work with the likes of Pharoah Sanders, Cleveland Watkiss and Tim Whitehead as well as his own excellent trio). Their musical roots stem from mid-60s Hubbard and Hancock, through Brazilian music to their own varied compositions, all performed with the highly unusual, but extremely effective, frontline of trombone and flute. Completing the quintet tonight will be RMG's regular rhythm section of Flo Moore-bass and Winston Clifford-drums. A world-class band performing classic contemporary compositions.

“[Gee] a performer of flexibility, resourcefulness and technical command to rival any of his generation" The Guardian; “Steve Rubie…in fine form.” Telegraph

9:45PM DILL KATZ is appearing later with his regular quartet, playing the more contemporary side of the spectrum. Dill, frequently referred to as a “bass legend”, is one of the most experienced players on the scene today, having pioneered the use of the fretless bass in the mid-sixties, and whose work includes stints with Ian Carr’s “Nucleus”, Barbara Thompson’s band “Paraphernalia” and Afro/Jazz band “District Six”. This gig also features the excellent guitar playing of Leon Stenning.

“Superior jazz-rock quartet led by ex-Nucleus electric bassist Katz” Time Out
