8:00PM SAMUEL EAGLES QUARTET Saxophonist Samuel Eagles (younger brother of fellow sax player Duncan Eagles), was tutored by sax great Mornington Lockett and RAM tutor Nick Smart before studying at Trinity College of Music with Grammy Award-winning, US-born saxophonist and former Jazz Messenger, Jean Toussaint, eventually graduating with a BMus (Hons) in Jazz Performance. Samuel recorded his first album, “Next Beginning” in 2014, which was hailed as a promising and engaging debut by Jazzwise and The Guardian (“His deftly swerving post-bop inventiveness illuminates”). Since then, Samuel has worked with Moses Boyd, Ant Law, Ollie Howell, Derek Nash, Eric Ford, Chris Draper, Theon Cross, Ed Riches & Laurie Lowe among many others. He has appeared at London, Marlborough, Lancaster, Thames, Barga and Oldenburg jazz festivals and continues to perform at UK jazz clubs and major venues including The Vortex, Southbank Centre, Kings Place and The Spice of Life. His current project “Spirit”, whose debut album of original material, “Ask Seek Knock”, was just released on the prestigious Whirlwind label in June 2017, features some of British jazz’s finest young musicians. The quartet he is leading this evening is a fascinating combination of excellent younger players - Ralph Wyld-vibes, Max Luthert-bass and Chris Draper-drums - and promises to be quite special.

“Not only is Eagles a saxophone player to be reckoned with but a top notch composer …” Bebop Spoken Here; “An extraordinarily accomplished debut from alto saxophonist, Eagles, that is full of vitality and individual enough to ensure that he stands out from the crowd.” Jazz Views
