The fall of Jerusalem on 9 December 1917 brought centuries of Ottoman rule to an end. It was undoubtedly a military success but also a formidable propaganda and political tool. On 11 December, General Allenby entered the Holy City on foot, well ahead of the rest of the procession, and presented himself as a liberator rather than a conqueror. Dr Juliette Desplat will talk about this turning point in the political running of the war in the Middle East, drawing on records held here at The National Archives.
