To celebrate National Poetry Day on Thursday 28th September 2017, St Pancras International is hosting a series of exclusive, free events in partnership with annual young poets’ competition, the ‘Betjeman Poetry Prize’ and poetry charity; ‘Poet in the City.’
Adding to its calendar of new and exciting arts and music experiences, visitors to the station will enjoy live poetry performances and events throughout the day. The line-up includes the hotly anticipated Betjeman Poetry Prize Awards ceremony, led by prize Director and Betjeman’s granddaughter, Imogen Lycett Green; with the young winner becoming the station’s third ‘St Pancras Laureate’. Poet in the City is back for a second year with their station-wide takeover giving visitors the opportunity to discover some of the newest and brightest poets from across the globe

Poet in the City presents: ‘Poetry Buskers’ (28 September / 10am-6pm)
Listen to tales of freedom and travel from Poet in the City’s liberty loving ‘Poetry Buskers’ Dean Atta, Laila Sumpton, Madi-Maxwell-Libby and Rachel Piercey who will be located across the station from 10am – 6pm.

Betjeman Poetry Prize with Rachel Rooney and Chris Riddell (28 September / 12.30-2.00pm)
Founded in 2006 to mark former Poet Laureate John Betjeman’s centenary, the Betjeman Poetry Prize attracts around 3,000 entries per year from 10-13 year olds across the UK.

The young poets’ competition will lead the afternoon’s events with its 11th annual Betjeman Poetry Prize Awards ceremony, hosted by this year’s judges, poet Rachel Rooney and cartoonist, writer, illustrator and Children's Laureate, Chris Riddell.

Thousands of entries were whittled down to a shortlist of six young hopefuls who will read their work aloud beneath station’s famous statue of Sir John Betjeman. The 2017 winner will also become the third annual ‘St Pancras Laureate’ and will be commissioned to write three further poems marking key calendar dates in the station.

Poet in the City presents: Lunchtime poetry workshop with Rachel Long (28 September / 12.30-1.30pm)

This year’s poetry theme is ‘Freedom’, and will explore the relationship between freedom and global travel.
Visitors to St Pancras International are welcomed to join Poet in the City outside Hatchards for a very different sort of lunch break this National Poetry Day, allowing guests to immerse themselves in the world of freedom, exploration and travel with a poetry workshop led by poet and curator, Rachel Long.

In Transit: Poet in the City with JJ Bola, Jolade Olusanya and Basel Zaraa (28 September / 6-7.30pm)

In the finale of Poet in the City’s station-wide takeover, the John Betjeman statue is the place to be for an evening of poetry and music, curated by Poet in the City Producers, Ariel Silverman, Olivia Amura, Rhea Seedher and Chibeza Mumbi.

Exploring freedom of global travel, whether that be through stories of the struggle to seek asylum; returning home; or embarking on adventure, spend an evening enjoying exciting explorations of what can happen when people from around the world meet and forge unique identities within London, all through poetry and music.
