Pureland Series is pleased to announce an evening with Julia Samuel MBE, the British author, psychotherapist, expert grief counsellor, author of Grief Works and Founder Patron of the charity Child Bereavement UK, on Tuesday 7 November 2017 at London’s China Exchange.

Samuel will be joined by Victoria Milligan and Tom Bradbury, on the effects and stages of grief, coping with loss and how individuals re-define themselves after death.

Julia Samuel is a psychotherapist specialising in grief, who has spent the last twenty-five years working with bereaved families. She has worked both in private practice and in the NHS at St Mary’s Hospital Paddington where she pioneered the role of maternity and paediatric psychotherapist. Samuel works with bereaved families, providing them with new
coping mechanisms and a renewed understanding of grief.

Samuel’s first book Grief Works: Stories of Life, Death and Surviving, was published in 2017. Grief Works is series of moving stories from her patients that individually explore various approaches and responses to grief and the bereavement process.

In 1994 Samuel founded Child Bereavement UK which has become a pivotal UK charity for bereavement. Child
Bereavement UK offer support to grieving children and offers training in grief counselling to over 8,000 professionals across the UK. After pioneering the role of maternity and paediatric psychotherapist in the paediatrics department of London’s St Mary’s Hospital Samuel was awarded an MBE in 2016 for her services to bereaved children.

Victoria Milligan lost her youngest daughter and husband in a boat accident in Cornwall in 2013. Mulligan lost a leg and her other two children suffered serious injuries. Since the accident Mulligan has spoken openly about her struggles with the loss of her husband and daughter, her grief and the impact on her family. As part of the discussion the panel will be talking about the tragedy of child bereavement, whether that be helping a child deal with death and grief or a family coping with the loss of a child. Milligan will be sharing her personal experience with this topic accompanied by Samuel offering advice and guidance on managing grief.

The discussion will be compered by TV journalist and ITV News at 10 presenter Tom Bradby. Bradby began his career as ITV's Ireland correspondent, reporting from Northern Ireland during the pivotal peace process, and then as ITV’s Asia correspondent, during which time he was badly injured whilst covering the Jakarta riots of 1999.

The Pureland Series at China Exchange invites inspirational speakers and like-minded people to share their visions of a world grounded in compassion, empowerment, spirituality and creativity. The series is hosted by the Pureland Foundation, supporting charitable endeavours to promote social, spiritual and emotional wellness. It also aims to enrich lives through art and music.
