A new collection of biomechanical sculptures will be unveiled in Shoreditch next week.

Titled Unchained, the body of work by sculptor, Dan Lane (aka Mechanica), will be on display at Village Underground on Holywell Lane on Wednesday 15th November.

The artist will make a special appearance between 6pm and 9pm at the quirky venue, which is housed in revamped tube carriages, shipping containers and a warehouse.

Unchained brings the power of the natural and man-made worlds together through the creation of ‘dark yet beautiful art’. The collection is heavily influenced by nature, with many pieces featuring flowers, insects and birds, juxtaposed by Dan’s mechanical style.

The artist takes inspiration from the Italian sculptor and architect, Gian Lorenzo Bernini. His work exudes elements of Baroque and Neoclassicism, and sees him sculpt, mould and cast the majority of components by hand, in addition to the inclusion of found or specially sourced objects.

After working as an engineer for 15 years, Dan began creating sculptures as a hobby. His family and friends persuaded him to go public with his art in 2014 after being impressed by his talent, and his work received an overwhelming response. He was signed by the UK’s leading fine art publisher, Washington Green, shortly after.
Dan’s first solo exhibition, Every Piece of Me, was a sell-out success in 2015, and he went on to feature in high profile campaigns and collections such as Sonic 25, a curated collection celebrating Sonic the Hedgehog’s 25th birthday. His original sculpture was purchased by SEGA and now takes pride of place in its UK headquarters.

Dan Lane said: “This collection has been a long time in the making and I’m beyond excited that the show is finally here. I had to develop some new techniques and paint methods for some of the pieces, so I’m looking forward to seeing how people respond to the work.”

Ian Weatherby-Blythe, group managing director of Castle Fine Art and Washington Green, said: “The launch of Dan’s Unchained collection has been eagerly anticipated and marks a huge milestone in his art career to date.

“Village Underground will be the perfect backdrop to unveil the sculptures on what promises to be a very exciting evening for both Dan and collectors of his work.”
