Celebrate the Feast of Saint George at Borough Market

Borough Market is showcasing both the English and International heritage of Saint George, with a family-friendly day filled with food, music, storytelling and theatre to celebrate the Turkish born Roman soldier’s influence around the world.

Visitors will get the opportunity to sample unique St George’s day products from Borough Market’s wide range of regional British and International traders, as well as taking part in traditional (with a twist) Saint George’s Day entertainment. Children and adults alike can enjoy an interactive performance of St George and the Dragon from local street theatre group the Lion’s Part, based on the traditional English Combat Play and incorporating references ranging from Shakespeare and dragon lore to more current ideas.

For maypole dancing with a decidedly contemporary edge, Folk Dance Remixed will be merging traditional steps with Hip Hop moves; encouraging Borough Market’s customers to create ‘wraps ‘n ripples’ and ‘waves ‘n breaks’ around a bespoke 12 foot maypole. There will be a chance for the whole family to learn a fun routine to live music, mixing street dance with classic?maypole?moves, such as the ‘Chrysanthemum?Wrap’ and?the ‘Twister’.

Borough Market will be packed with the very best of English produce—from Colchester oysters and Tamworth pork to Melton Mowbray pies and Cheddar cheese. In addition, to celebrate Saint George’s international status as the patron saint not only of England, but of Georgia, Ethopia, Greece, Turkey, and Catalonia, there will be traditional food delicacies from around the world on sale from stallholders, and the Castellers of London will be constructing a human tower, in a Catalan tradition that dates back more than 200 years.

Saint George is also the patron saint of butchers and shepherds, and Borough regular Luke Mackay will be providing meaty culinary inspiration with free cooking demonstrations highlighting butchery. Luke will be joined by rare and traditional breed producer Northfield Farm, who can offer advice on preparation and cooking times to ensure customers get the most from their meat. This is the culmination of ‘The St George Residency’ a month of specially commissioned Demo Kitchens held at Borough Market throughout April, showcasing the patron saint’s global stature with a range of celebratory International and English dishes.
