Performed by Rosamund Shelley & Tim Hardy, Accompanied by Gavin Roberts, Directed by Gareth Armstrong.

The love affair between the poets Robert Browning and Elizabeth Barrett began before they had ever met. Browning first read some of Barrett’s poems in January 1845, and from that moment he fell in love with ‘that fresh, strange music’, and with Elizabeth herself. Elizabeth for her part, so long housebound with an illness no doctor seemed able to fathom, could not ‘admit visitors in a general way‘, but received Robert ‘of choice and willingly ‘. Theirs was a love that survived implacable opposition from Elizabeth’s domineering father, and moments of great self-doubt and fear on Elizabeth’s part, finally to flourish in Italy after their eventual elopement.

This is their story, assembled and performed by the performers, from their letters and poems, and from Ron Grainer’s musical ‘Robert and Elizabeth’, with the help of John David.
