Soloists of Bolshoi Theatre, Mariinsky Theatre and Moscow State Conservatory perform chamber music by Russian contemporary composer Leonid Desyatnikov.
Desyatnikov invokes not just folk material but also jazz and Steve Reich—and Stravinsky (The New Yorker). This is a showcase of Desyatnikov's chamber music – the part of his output that made him famous in Russia. This includes the UK premiere of his Bukovina Songs, a set of piano preludes loosely based on Ukrainian folk songs of Bukovina region in the Carpathian Mountains. In this cycle he returns to his roots, citing the melodies he listened a lot in his childhood — or, as he states it, ‘soaked with the milk of my home radio’.
