About the event
Monteverdi: Hor ch'el ciel e la terra (arr. P Fender)
Mahler: Symphony No.6
Peter Fender, conductor
The wonderfully sonorous sound of a section of Monteverdi's groundbreaking 8th book of Madrigals precedes Mahler's mammoth 6th symphony. Nicknamed 'The Tragic' it contains a large orchestral 'hammer' which is supposed to represent the 'hammer of fate'. Certainly the end of the piece is dark, and it has even been described as "the first nihilistic work in the history of music". Yet there are sections of enormous joy: as often with Mahler one is taken through a vast gamut of emotions! According to Tom Service it is "the most surreal, sonically imaginative and emotionally disturbing [symphony] of them all."
