On 22-23 June 2018, the British Academy will open its historic central London building to the public for the first ever Summer Showcase, a free festival of ideas for curious minds.

Fifteen interactive exhibits will bring to life fascinating ideas in the humanities and social sciences, from how our ancestors used to sleep, to what your appearance says about your lifestyle habits.

The Showcase takes place in the British Academy’s beautiful Regency building and gardens overlooking The Mall on Carlton House Terrace. Rarely open to the public, this historic house was once home to Prime Minister William Gladstone.

Meet the researchers, take part in hands-on activities and listen to fascinating talks on what it means to be human, past present and future:

• Try on a new diet: using facial transformation software, discover how food and lifestyle affect how you are seen by others
• Experience how our ancestors used to sleep, make your own Tudor sleep remedy and pick up top sleep tips from history
• Explore the depiction of the history and culture of the American ‘Wild West’ in retro videogames
• Listen to spectacular piano performances from a rising star in South African jazz as he explains the thinking behind his work.

A special late viewing of the Summer Showcase takes place on Friday 22 June. Drop in to see the exhibits, enjoy stand-up comedy with a literary twist, sample edible perfume inspired by the research on display, or relax with a cocktail based on Tudor health tips.

The British Academy Summer Showcase and the Late viewing are free to attend, but booking is required for groups of over eight people.
