About the event

BAFTA’s photographic exhibition celebrating the work and achievements of women in the film, games and television industries will be open to the public on 4/5 August 2018.

Since the establishment of the Academy in 1947, many ground-breaking, talented women have steered the course of BAFTA and many more have shaped the art forms we celebrate and support.

This exhibition of photography, film and unit stills is dedicated to the work and achievements of over 90 women from BAFTA’s history and that of film, games and television in Britain. It features over 100 images, ephemera and video footage from the BAFTA archives, external libraries and collections.

Each woman featured in the exhibition has made history in her own way, and represents a ‘BAFTA first’ of some kind - from Mitzi Cunliffe, the woman who created the iconic BAFTA mask to writer Shelagh Delaney, the first woman to win a BAFTA in a behind-the-scenes category; Dame Maggie Smith, the first to become a Fellow of the Academy and Amanda Berry, the first to become its president. Each woman has not only contributed to excellence in the screen arts, she has defined it.

This is a unique opportunity to come into BAFTA’s historic headquarters in London and discover the pioneering women that have come to define film, TV and games through the decades.
