Louise Balkwill

An impressive and talented young singer, in 2012 Louise Balkwill won a scholarship to Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance where she developed her skills under the tutelage of the likes of Liane Carroll and Barry Harris. Her love for the American Songbook combined with an impressive technique and ability to “swing” have seen her already perform at many of the capital’s foremost venues, including Pizza Express Dean Street, Ronnie Scott's, Charlie Wright's and Oliver's Jazz Bar. Her musical relationship with guitarist Stefan Melovski, also featured this evening, developed through a mutual admiration for the likes of classic US singers such as Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington and Carmen McRae. They have since won the hearts of audiences with their joint passion for beautiful songs, raucous blues and infectious swing. In addition to her UK ventures, Louise regularly travels overseas and has performed in New York, New Orleans, Japan and all over Europe. Louise has also become known as an acclaimed authority on New Orleans music, and directs The Old Jelly Rollers, a New Orleans style second line band, founded in 2016. Making up the rest of the ensemble this evening will be Lewis Taylor-trumpet; Stefan Melovski-guitar; Pete Komor-bass and Rod Oughton-drums. An impressive young band performing straight ahead jazz in an infectious and authentic style.
