Nigeria is on the front-line of the global crisis of education, with 10.5 million children out of school and millions of those who do attend school leaving unable to read a basic sentence. The film, created with BAFTA and EMMY winning film-makers - Red Rebel Films - showcases the work that Universal Learning Solutions has been carrying out, with the support of the Nigerian Federal Government, on the Jolly Phonics project. Starting with 6 schools in one Nigerian state in 2006, over 55,000 teachers have now been trained in this fast track literacy method and reached over 3.5 million pupils. The success of the project has all been made possible thanks to a unique project model, with funding provided by the Nigerian Federal Government Body, the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) and philanthropic support from the UK publisher, Jolly Learning. As such it offers a real viable alternative to the current aid paradigm. This film highlights the positive work being carried out by teachers and government in Nigeria and aims to inspire others working to enable children to access their right to literacy around the world.
