Although set in Spain, Carmen is French! She is a chameleon, a player, cold, hot, one moment idealistic, the next fatalist. She is not this hands-on-hips sweaty, southern gypsy, a sultry mezzo coming on and staying sultry for three hours

Bizet had never been to Spain. Carmen’s Habanera is a standard one borrowed from the Spanish composer Sebastian Iradier, whom Bizet eventually credited in the score, having initially believed it to be a folk song.

This is an evening not to be missed, with a cast of rising stars who have trained at the National Opera Studio and the Royal Opera House. Josephine Thorpe, Susana Gaspar, Bechara Mouffarej are performing on the most prestigious international stages including Opera de Paris, Qatar, Dubai, Sadlers Wales, Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Welsh National Opera, Teatro Nacional de São Carlos, BBC Proms!

The Orchestra will be led by Eugene Lee, permanent member of the Philharmonia Orchestra and Associate Leader at Southbank Sinfonia.

Glass Ceiling musical director and conductor, Sonia Ben-Santamaria.

The last 12 months has seen an incredible cultural change, a year of awakenings, celebrating women in all forms: those in the mainstream and those on someone’s margins; on a pedestal or deprived of recognition. Glass Ceiling musical director, Sonia Ben-Santamaria is this season the very first female conductor associated to the Royal Opera House young artists programme.
