The Central Park Design Walk

As part of London Design Festival, Greenwich Peninsula is design walk exploring 4 narrative public artworks by young, dynamic, UK-based designers and architects.


Printed Water:
A playful design by HATO encouraging people to explore, interact and pause whilst travelling south down Phoenix Avenue. The concept and themes behind the graphics are inspired by Greenwich Peninsula’s waterfront view and simulate a wave of movement through the site. Whilst the graphic language references a library of graphical marks that are often created during the printing process and represent the craft behind design, echoing the ethos of the forthcoming ‘Design District’. These unique marks are drawn from HATO’s own practice of running the printing press and publishing house Hato Press.
The scheme consists of 12 bespoke designs for seats, a 45m floor graphic and 85m hoarding artwork. All of which have been painted in a bold six colour scheme.

33:
Studio Weave, in collaboration with HATO and illustrator Jay Cover, ‘33’ is a three storey decorative folly, drawing sightlines through the central park towards the Victorian terraces, focussing on the discourse of ‘What home is’.

‘33’ references a mix of historical architectural styles in an abstract way: Edwardian, Victorian and Georgian. The structure is a delicate timber studwork, with the design featuring a galvanized steel, powder coated staircase in vibrant yellow. On the second level, the floor will be finished in epoxy paint stencilled graphics that symbolise the flat room settings within the ‘home’. ‘33’ will be in situ for 3 years.

A Pinch in Time:
Located on Millennium way, South East London based studio FleaFolly have created an extruded mural, A Pinch in Time. The mural comprises of an overlaid pattern using circular motifs from the area, such as the Blackwall gas tower, the Millennium Dome and the Great Hall of Queens House, which they then coloured, scaled and manipulated to create a vibrant form imbued with the past. This layered pattern was then digitally printed, by Liverpool based Tilefire, on 20cm x 20cm ceramic tiles, totalling 1250 tiles that were each one of a kind.

Calvary 360°:
In place for one week only for LDF, this mechanical installation will create a juxtaposition of noise and structure in an urban landscape with 32 wind turbines driving hundreds of mini beaters to generate an ever changing equine rhythm. The artwork is arranged in a circular form to allow people to step into the work and look out through framed views of the fort and landscape. The circular form creates an experience much like being in a room with a surround sound stereo system where the soundscape is constantly altering in direction and rhythm. The emphasises is on the way the horse changed our ability to travel greater distances, and at greater speeds than ever before. Greenwich Peninsula played a huge part in the change in manufacture and design during the Industrial Revolution, Neon’s work echoes this past as we stand and listen to the sound not part of our modern day experience. Cavalry 360° was initially commissioned by English Heritage as part of the multi-partner Arts Council England-funded Hadrian’s Cavalry exhibition (www.hadrianscavalry.co.uk) across the Roman wall.

From 6.30 pm, meet at NOW Gallery where you will be welcomed with drinks and light refreshments and given a map to each of the installations.

7 pm – a procession of dancers, led by Clare Orme with the designer Alex Noble will start at NOW Gallery and walk to Cavalry 360° as part of the design walk. Each performer will have an aeolian harp as head pieces which will sound out. As the performers move and the wind blows through, ghostly, ethereal tones will be made.
