The Badlands Collective is proud to present Painfully Funny: The Complete Directorial Works of Elaine May, a special weekend of screenings celebrating a filmmaker whose work has been neglected for too long. Elaine May is one of the most brilliant and influential comics of the 20th century, with Woody Allen, Judd Apatow, Steve Martin, Lily Tomlin and Robin Williams being among the many writers and performers who have paid tribute to her genius, but the films she directed have been allowed to fall out of the conversation and out of circulation. Five years after we first conceived the idea of an Elaine May retrospective, we are finally bringing together her four films as a director on rarely seen 35mm prints at the ICA, giving audiences a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to discover this maverick artist.
