Why do 75% of mental health problems start before the age of 18? Is it merely a coincidence that suicide is the biggest killer of young people in the UK? Join Broadcaster & Women's Aid ambassador Charlie Webster, for a thought provoking Funzing Talk, where we ask the question; Could a focus on Emotional Wellbeing in Children be the key to a happier Adult life?

If a child isn’t taught to read they can’t read. It is exactly the same with emotions. If our emotional needs aren’t met as a child it's not possible to function as a socially and mentally healthy adult. Children don’t understand the full story of behaviours around them so they fill in the gaps that more often than not leads them to blaming themselves.

The last few years have taken Charlie on a journey that forced her to look at her own emotional behaviour and mental health. She fell critically ill and ended up on life support. Everything she was feeling emotionally went back to her childhood – we develop behaviour patterns from our childhood messages we don’t pluck them out of thin air.

By the age of 10 years old the ground is laid for our thinking. Therefore what we see and are told forms the way we feel about ourselves – and the way we feel about ourselves completely dictates the way we act toward the outside world and the way we empathise with others.

Have you ever wondered where your own critical inner voice comes from – the one that puts doubt into your mind and says you aren’t good enough? Understanding why we have internal messages that make us feel vulnerable, where they come from and the way they make us behave can not only completely change an adult’s life but also give a clear insight into why we need to nurture young people.

What would future generations look like if as a priority we invested in building each child to become an emotionally healthy adult? The saying goes it is easier to build a child than it is to fix a broken adult. This talk will explore both.
