Well, this is a really interesting gig. Fronted by two of the UK's leading jazz vocalists, Sarah Moule and Trudy Kerr, this gig delves in to the 1950's and 60's world of hard bop, hipsters and beatniks. Think Mad Men meets Jools Holland! It features music that inspired the "Beat Poets" such as Kerouac and Ginsberg, who were themselves heavily into jazz, and the musicians they went on to inspire. Over to Sarah for a description: "The Beat Goes On evokes the cool, stylish world of 50's and 60's New York. Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Joni Mitchell and the Beatles all drew inspiration from the freewheeling style of Jack Kerouac and the Greenwich Village ‘Beat Poets’ and their songs feature alongside some of the super-hip jazz of the era. We have all worked closely with 94 year old Bob Dorough and the late, great Fran Landesman, two key figures on the 1950s New York scene whose razor-sharp lyrics perfectly complement the hip vocalese of Lambert, Hendricks and Ross in a set which takes a joyful look at the legacy of the "Beats"". Sarah Moule is a wonderful, sophisticated singer with a smooth and poised style. Without doubt one of the UK’s leading jazz vocalists she has a real gift to convey a lyric, whether knowing and worldly-wise, witty, pensive or hopeful. The mark of a great song stylist! Since arriving in the UK from Australia in the early 90's Trudy Kerr has established herself as a powerful and respected artist on the British and European Jazz scenes. Her highly skilled, nimble, voice is a real pleasure to hear and as well as 11 albums under her own name she also includes work with the likes of Mulgrew Miller, Georgie Fame and Jamie Cullum on an extensive and impressive cv. The evening will also feature pianist/composer Simon Wallace (who co-wrote many successful songs with Fran Landesman). Promises to be a lot of fun, booking recommended.
