A musician of remarkable maturity for one so young – 22 years of age – and a recent graduate of the Royal Academy of Music, Jonny Mansfield was just awarded, amongst many distinctions he has received, the 2018 Kenny Wheeler Jazz Prize. A vibraphonist/drummer/percussionist and composer based in London, Jonny began studying at the Royal Academy of Music in 2014 and in addition to leading his own 11 piece band, “Elftet” which you will be hearing today, is a member of the acclaimed contemporary jazzfusion band Jam Experiment as well as performing with the National Youth Jazz Orchestra and other groups, including touring the north of England with US sax star Chris Potter. Describing the Elftet’s concept as having a “wide palette of textures and colours, from traditional four horn writing to more contemporary classical music with the use of strings and vibraphone”, Jonny and the group are currently working on the Elftet’s debut record to be released on boutique jazz label Edition Records in 2019.
