Dirk Gently is the proprietor of a detective agency whose operation is based on the principle that all things in the universe are fundamentally interconnected. Normally, Dirk specialises in missing cats and messy divorces, but he makes an exception when a fairly gruesome murder means that the existence of human life on earth might be threatened. And he has to cope without the music of Johann Sebastian Bach – because in Dirk Gently’s space-time continuum, no such composer has ever existed. Although pizza does, obviously. And cats (of course).

Adams himself described ‘Dirk Gently’s Holistic Detective Agency’ as a ‘thumping good detective-ghost-horror-who dunnit-time travel-romantic-musical-comedy-epic’. What’s not to like?
