Most photography exhibitions feature a carefully curated set of images to be contemplated and admired by reverent visitors at their leisure. But a new photography show opening in London’s Soho next week will turn this notion completely on its head - by being completely live. Part performance, part cultural reportage, part photo challenge, The Sexton ‘Own The Night’ Live Photography Exhibition will invite visitors to witness the events of a single evening unfolding in multiple cities, in real time, before their very eyes.
Six photographers will be roaming the streets in various UK locations, taking pictures throughout the evening before sending them to be displayed on digital screens in the London gallery moments later - a truly instantaneous experience for an instant-driven society.
The audaciously ephemeral exhibition has been commissioned by The SextonTM Single Malt Whiskey. In its mission to 'Own the Night', The Sexton Whiskey is setting out to bring the nocturnal creatively restless spirit to life through all the senses.
The namesake of The Sexton was the traditional custodian of sacred objects; the one who prepared the grave and the last person to see people, body and soul, before they were buried. As such The Sexton whiskey has a different perspective on life. And, as a unique single malt, that is perfect for mixing, it will also bring a totally new perspective on whiskey drinking.
For this event, The Sexton's photographers will explore their cities as the sun begins to set, documenting the world as shadows lengthen, offices close and the city comes alive. Because of the constantly evolving nature of the exhibition, with images changing every few minutes, visitors at one point in the evening will receive a completely different experience to visitors at another time.
The photographers (curated with the help of the Association of Photographers) include award-winning conceptual, reportage, street photographers and up-and-coming talents. Each will be capturing a range of events and locations in their own personal styles, featuring characters from across London, Manchester, Edinburgh and Dublin who will all become protagonists on the gallery walls… for a few moments at least.
Complimentary activities at the gallery will include a selection of Sexton cocktails to tie in with the event, and the opportunity to visit The Darkroom - a sensory whiskey experience inspired by the darkrooms used to develop print photographs. Here, with their vision dimmed by the low lights, visitors’ other senses will be heightened allowing them to appreciate new levels of flavour brought to life by the sounds, scents and of course taste of The Sexton
Master Blender Alex Thomas commented, "The nature of this exhibition will provide a unique insight into the night and will beautifully document urban life after dark as it happens. The Sexton’s ‘Own The Night’ photographers are playing around with styles, subjects and situations, much like I do behind the scenes during the creative distilling process - so I expect Sexton Whiskey and photography to forge a powerful connection on the night.”
Seamus McGibben from the Association of Photographers, said, “Street photography has always been a unique creative space, but combined with the concept of sharing and showing live stills that change from the day into the night in real time, makes this a very exciting project. What’s more, our members are naturally creative and their subjects change in blink of a shutter - so we expect the challenge to produce some interesting results.”
