Renowned clarinettist David Campbell, one of the finest musicians of his generation, is the soloist in an evocative clarinet concerto by the Irish composer Stanford, infused with melodies from the Emerald Isle. This is complemented by English rustic nostalgia in the form of Vaughan Williams’ jolly English Folk Song Suite; Rossini’s overture The Turk in Italy and Pavane by Gabriel Faure. The evening culminates in Mendelssohn’s joyous Italian Symphony – the composer’s poetic celebration of the spirit of Italy.
