Nu sounds all-dayer
Produced and presented by The Cockpit /Jazz In The Round

Emergence is a new quarterly arts lab event for musicians, sonic artists, producers, cross-arts collaborators and audiences.

It takes place over a day and evening either on a Saturday or Sunday about every 3 months with a three-day Emergence festival at St Mary’s in The Castle in Hastings in April 2020.

Emergence will feature four or five bands, individual players and others, and we are inviting dance and spoken word artists to get involved. As time goes on, we want to provide an opportunity for London Jazz to make connections, artistic, political or literary as well as purely musical wherever and with whoever it chooses to make them.

Jack Foster (DJ) Allysha Joy (TBC), Clara Serra López (Ludi's Eye), & MA

Jack Foster is the curator and creator of Do 4 Love and record seller at Eldica Records.
Alongside Do 4 Love Jack also runs Mechanix, a party born out of a mechanics garage in North East London.

Clara Serra Lopez is a London based vocalist and composer dabbling in piano and percussion... amongst other things.

From spacey melodies to intense energy,
“Ma” is the Japanese symbol ”?” described as “an emptiness full of possibilities, like a promise yet to be fulfilled“.
They mix influences from jazz to hip-hop, sprinkled with some drum and bass rhythms and a rock state of mind to create a unique sound.

Emergence grew out of The Cockpit's contemporary jazz programming. For seven years Jazz In The Round has been proud to be part of London jazz, presenting, recording and broadcasting the stream of evolving talent supported superbly by initiatives like The Total Refreshment Centre, Jazz Refreshed and Steam Down and running stages at Love Supreme, Kings Place and The Roundhouse.

Like Jazz In The Round, Emergence will happen in the round - only with the seats taken out. It offers a time and a space for players, artists and audiences to come together around a longer bill for a standing, dance-friendly all day event where people can meet, experiment and make the right mistakes. Emergence is curated by Lyle Barton and Rachel Jackson but the intention is for it to be self-propagating: with input from as broad a rang of people as possible: musicians (and anybody else) are very welcome to suggest other artists, working in any art form, who might want to participate.

As London Jazz makes its way out into the world, The Cockpit wants to continue giving support to artists of all kinds who respond to this exciting new sound, wholly owned by the Londoners that make it.

Our regular monthly Jazz In The Round sit-down gig will continue on the last Monday of every month where we will continue to record, film and find distribution opportunities for as many artists as we can. Emergence adds a looser, day long arts lab event in June, September, November and February, leading to Emergence festival in April 2020.
