Step back in time to 1768 for an enchanting operatic experience led by our Chamber Opera Ensemble in residence, Insieme, as part of this year’s Highgate Festival.

You are invited to a ‘Promenade and Opera’ hosted by the famous Viennese 'Magnetist' Dr Mesmer in his splendid home.

In the mode of the promenade concerts of the 18th century, take a turn around the Tea Lawn as Dr Mesmer's musicians perform live in the summer sun. Following on from this Dr Mesmer will invite all his guests to join him inside the house for a performance of Mozart's delightful comic chamber opera, Bastien and Bastienne.

Bastien and Bastienne was written by Mozart in 1768 when he was only 12. It is a simple and delightful tale of the trials of Bastien and his shepherdess love Bastienne, with additional mesmeric magic from the Wizard Colas... plus plenty of other mischief.

This unique evening of entertainment is inspired by the promenade concerts which were popular in the 18th century. Feel free to make your appearance in your most resplendent party clothes - or even in an outfit suitable for 1768!

Please note that the event will take place partly outside on the Tea Lawn (weather permitting) and partly inside Lauderdale House in a more formal concert setting. The promenade begins at 7pm, with doors open from 6.30pm.
