Portobello Summer Festival free music and arts festival goes ‘local to global’

This year’s Portobello Summer festival is gearing up to be one to remember with a focus on building a platform for local artists to take their creative efforts out into the world.

The festival has in the past seen the likes of Fabio & Grooverider, Soul II Soul, Audio Bullys and local hip-hop star and activist Lowkey perform to eclectic local, national and global audiences, creating a summer party atmosphere.

With the line-up soon to be announced, 2019’s festival is set to be an equally genre-spanning affair, encompassing R&B, hip-hop, funk, disco, house, electronic, jazz and more. The festival theme of ’local to global’ seeks to celebrate and emulate the area’s history of elevating local talent, from music to fashion, to world-renowned status.

The theme is also reflected across the street food, dance and other cultural offerings, bringing the area’s unique qualities together on one amazing site.

Westway Trust, working in partnership with the clubs, galleries, street food vendors and subculture spaces across its 23-acre estate, aims to produce an event that celebrates and benefits North Kensington.

Diane Morgan, Head of Arts and Culture at Westway Trust, said: “We’re excited that this year’s emphasis is on new talent breaking through and breaking new ground in a free community festival environment, and we’re passionate about making sure it acts as a catalyst for innovation, ambitious ideas and new collaborations in the future.”

Venues include Portobello Green, Subterania, Westbank Gallery, Acklam Village and BAYSIXTY6 Skate Park.

Portobello Summer Festival is part of Westway Trust’s Arts and Culture programme, which aims to support the celebration of local heritage and the creation of contemporary culture. From festivals and participatory projects to new artistic work, new cultural spaces and digital technology, we’re exploring the identities and future aspirations of our communities, developing new ideas and audiences, and nurturing the next generation of artists, creatives and cultural leaders.
