Light Up the Night, Wembley Park’s unique fusion of Diwali, the Hindu Festival of Lights, and Bonfire Night will return to London’s newest cultural hotspot on Sunday 10th November.

The free, family-friendly, cultural event and fireworks show will be the first opportunity for locals and visitors alike to enjoy the recently transformed Olympic Way, the world famous avenue connecting Wembley Park tube station to Wembley Stadium and SSE Arena, as a public promenade and event space. The festivities will celebrate the unique mix of cultures in this dynamic, diverse neighbourhood.

Residents of, and visitors to, Wembley Park will have the chance to attend lantern making workshops in the weeks leading up to the event and throughout the day. They will then be invited to carry their creations in the evening’s parade, when they will journey down Olympic Way accompanied by a newly commissioned, custom score composed by Ben Raine of Emergency Exit Arts (EEA).

Participants in the parade and viewers watching as it travels down Olympic Way will also enjoy the sight of giant illuminated butterflies, a magnificent five-metre tall mechanical Fire Bird inspired by the Garuda bird myths found in Hindu, Buddhist and Jain culture and three brand-new, giant puppets designed by artist Tony Mason for the Light Up the Night celebrations. The new puppets will be over three metres tall and are inspired by the history of Diwali and Bonfire Night, acknowledging the inclusive and representative spirit of the event. Costumes will be supplied by Mahogany, famous for their elaborate creations that have been on show at Notting Hill Carnival, the 2012 Olympic Ceremony and the Queen’s Golden Jubilee.

The night’s celebrations will be topped off by an elaborate fireworks display, which will launch from Engineers Way, facing the iconic National Stadium. The event will also feature fairground rides, a community stage and specially themed menus at London Designer Outlet, street food and music at Boxpark Wembley.

As one of the few remaining completely free Bonfire Night seasonal events in London, last year’s inaugural Light Up the Night drew huge crowds. This year the event is expected to be bigger and better, with capacity for up to 30,000 people.
