The National Archives is delighted to present a series of wine tastings, themed around some of its immense catalogue of documentation relating to wine and trade. Presented by Pippa Hayward, a wine educator and wine travel guide, each tasting will start with an introductory talk and the opportunity to see facsimiles of related historical documents, followed by a tutored tasting of six wines.

From Jan Van Riebeeck’s settling in Cape Town in 1655, the incorporation of The Cape Colony into the British Empire in 1814 and the more recent impact of sanctions; South Africa’s wine industry has often struggled to survive. Yet its wines have never been better, nor its wine industry more vibrant and varied. The tasting will include wines that reflect South Africa’s current wine industry.
