Sarah Henley and Tori Allen-Martin’s new play Essence will appear at the VAULT festival this February, their first work since last summer’s controversial Young Vic production of Tree at Manchester International Festival.

Written by Henley, and directed by Allen-Martin, Essence explores themes of trust, difference and acceptance.

Laquaya (15 - loves hip-hop, feminism, Peperami) has broken into Elyot’s house. Elyot (32) is reclusive, eccentric and probably quite lonely. He’s making a model boat and listening to Beethoven whilst checking off his life week by week on a chart on the wall.
Watch this odd couple go on a humorous and heart-warming journey from denial to acceptance, overcoming extreme difference and vulnerability to realise that deep down, the essence of each of them make for a perfect match.

Starring newcomer Nina Barker-Francis and Vault veteran Timothy O’Hara (Mousetrap, Shakespeare In Love, Little Mermaid at Theatre Royal, Bath), Essence explores what it’s like to be lonely, how much it takes to let people in, and how the messy bits of life are ultimately where the gold lies.

Following two previous collaborations with director Allen-Martin (Streets, Muted), Henley returns to the VAULT Festival after last year’s successful run of Burkas and Bacon Butties which will transfer to the Park Theatre later this year.

Tori Allen-Martin, director, said: “After the difficulty of the last year, it’s great to work together again on this project. Essence feels particularly relevant right now – it’s all about people from different worlds, with different opinions coming together and finding common ground.

“As divisions in society seem to be becoming increasingly apparent, attempting to break down barriers is something we can all relate to. This piece is a beautiful, emotionally complex, sweet and touching story about two misfits feeling a little bit less alone as they connect their dots.”

Expect music (classical vs hip hop), dancing (passable vs all out dreadful) and heavy doses of Great British Awkwardness thrown in for good measure, running 21st to 23rd February 2020 at Crescent- VAULT Festival. Tickets are available via the VAULT website for £13.
