Over 25 sculptures by Helaine Blumenfeld OBE will be displayed throughout the Estate, including Blumenfeld’s new three-part Carrara Marble sculpture ‘Taking Risks’

A collection of sculpture by Helaine Blumenfeld

London, February 2020 – Canary Wharf’s extensive public art offering is set to expand this spring, with the launch of Helaine Blumenfeld’s latest exhibition, LOOKING UP. This will be Blumenfeld’s largest solo exhibition and celebrates the American sculptor’s 50-year career, featuring a number of impressive, large scale works. Free to the public, the exhibition will run from Monday 16th March – Friday 26th June.

Exhibits in the Lobby of One Canada Square will show the range of media that Blumenfeld uses – Statuario marble, Travertine marble, bronze, wood and terracotta. Included are seven pieces specifically created to feature in the exhibition, including Toward the Precipice 2019 carved from marble, and Flight and Aurora 2019, elegant pieces sculpted from cedar wood, which each stand at over 2.5 metres high.

The array of sculptures on show will feature an extensive group of works dating from the 1970s to current day, and includes Blumenfeld’s new three-part sculpture, Taking Risks 2019. Carved from Carrara marble, the piece is a testament to Blumenfeld’s artistic versatility and pushes the boundaries of using traditional materials to create cutting edge contemporary sculpture with real relevance.

In celebration of her work and the exhibition, Canary Wharf Group has commissioned Metamorphosis, a piece which will be added to the permanent collection shown throughout the Estate. The four-metre bronze sculpture will be unveiled in Canary Wharf’s new district, Wood Wharf, and will join previously commissioned sculpture Fortuna 2016, which has been located in Jubilee Park since its installation in the same year.

The exhibition projects Blumenfeld’s passion for making sculpture and for making it accessible to all in the hope that her work will resonate with every section of the public that passes through Canary Wharf each day.

Curator, Ann Elliot, and Helaine Blumenfeld, will also be hosting exhibition tours on Tuesday 12 May and Tuesday 9 June, 6.30—7.30pm. For more information, visit www.canarywharf.com.
