128 Athletes compete for 5 gold medals

Rowing for disabled competitors has been available since 1975 although it only became an exhibition sport in the Paralympics in 1993. The early adaptive rowing programmes were enjoyed by competitors from Germany, Australia, the Netherlands and the United States.

Although the rowing demonstration was particularly popular and incorporated into the World Rowing Championship it took nearly ten years for it to become a fully fledged sport in the Paralympics until 2002.

As part of the Paralympics, four different classes are held; one is for four people, one is for a pair and two single events. The team events are mixed sex but the individual teams separate men and women. Regardless of the event, all courses are 1000 metres long. Each country can make only one entry for each event, ensuring that the competition remains competitive and open to all until the very end.

The equipment itself has been adapted to deal with the individual competitor’s disability, making it very much a team sport in terms of those supporting the event. The International Rowing Federation is the single governing body for the event which ensures that the same rules are followed throughout the whole world. Recent games have attracted participants from 25 different countries and it is one of the fastest growing events in the Paralympics.
