This summer Barbican Film presents Watch Me Move – On the Big Screen, a special animation season that complements Watch Me Move: The Animation Show in Barbican Art Gallery (1).

Throughout June, July and August 2011 the programme explores the work of some of the animation world’s most influential filmmakers, starting in Europe with Jan Švankmajer (16 to 25 June), Georges Méliès (26 June) and Břetislav Pojar (5 July), and moving on to Japan with Hayao Miyazaki’s groundbreaking Studio Ghibli (6 to 31 July).

The programme is a showcase for brand new films as well as classics from around the world: Katsuhiro Otomo’s 1988 landmark Akira (24 to 30 June), The London International Animation Festival Presents: The Best of the Fest (4 July) and We Love Anime (7 July). Japanese animation is also honoured in August with Barbican Anime at Canary Wharf, a series of free outdoor screenings in Canada Square Park, which are part of the CREATE11 Festival that takes place in east and southeast London between 24 June and 25 July and celebrates the intrinsic creativity of the area (2).

Finally, to round off the Watch Me Move season, The London International Animation Festival (26 August to 4 September), comes to the Barbican for the first time to present the best new films from around the world.
