Mapping Kingston’s Hidden Histories with Muybridge, Fish and Death

Paul Farrington’s Kingston Navigation Wheel launches Sat 28 April at the Stanley Picker Gallery

Kingston residents and visitors will have a chance to uncover a ‘hidden’ Kingston this Spring/Summer with the help of designer Paul Farrington’s Kingston Navigation Wheel. Commissioned by the Stanley Picker Gallery, Kingston University, for No Competition! - an off-site programme of free events taking place across Kingston, London and online while the venue itself is closed for refurbishments, the Kingston Navigation Wheel has been developed as part of a Royal Borough of Kingston initiative - funded by the Mayor of London’s Outer London Fund and Design for London – to create new ways for pedestrians to enjoy Kingston Town Centre.
This revolvable paper disc maps out a series of five enigmatically themed cultural walking trails and alternative routes around town which engage pedestrians in a game of observation and discovery. Each themed walk - 3 Fishes, Death, Bridges, Made Here and Muybridge – begins at the Market House in Kingston town centre has been designed to unveil individual and collective histories associated with Kingston through a set of questions and answers printed on the navigation wheel, Free copies will be available on the launch day, and at the Market House, Kingston Museum, Rose Theatre and Kingston University’s Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture from May-June.
Well known for his playful and eclectic body of interactive design work, Paul Farrington has worked on commissions for The Royal College of Art, Channel 4 and musicians such as Moby and Depeche Mode. His research for this particular project has been informed by the history of Surrey Walking Club, Victorian photographer Eadweard Muybridge, the sporting pursuits of Orienteering and Pedestrianism – popular in the late 1800s – and interviews with local residents.

Collect your free copy of the wheel at the No Competition! launch event and join a guided tour led by its creator Paul Farrington. The Kingston Navigation Wheel will also be available at the Market House, Kingston Museum, Rose Theatre and Kingston University’s Faculty of Art, Design and Architecture.
